Yesterday, CBS opted to cancel its original drama series S.W.A.T. after eight seasons. The drama is expected to air its series finale in May 2025.
This isn't the first time CBS has tried to cancel the drama. In May 2023, the broadcast network decided to cancel the series after six seasons. Just a few days later, that decision was reverse. Instead, the network picked up the drama for a seventh and final season. However, the channel picked up the series for an eighth season in May 2024. But now, this cancellation is expected to be the official end.
Moreover, S.W.A.T. becomes the third drama to be cancelled by CBS this week that comes from an outside studio. FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted came from Universal Television while S.W.A.T. was from Sony Pictures Television. In the past, financial terms were met between CBS and the studios. Now, the network reportedly decided to end the series rather than enter complicated negotiations with the studios for these aging series.
S.W.A.T. stars Shemar Moore, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, Niko Pepaj and Annie Ilonzeh.
Andrew Dettmann serves as showrunner on the final season. He executive produces with Moore, Shawn Ryan, Justin Lin, Neal H. Moritz, Marney Hochman, Pavun Shetty, Billy Gierhart and James Scura. In addition to CBS and Sony, the drama is produced by Perfect Storm Entertainment, Original Film and MiddKid Productions.
"It's heartbreaking news, primarily because it's been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we've always been proud of," said Dettmann. "They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can't give them enough credit. I feel so privileged to have been a part of the S.W.A.T. family."
